There are Benefits to Being a Safe Driver
Being a safe driver saves lives, stress, time and money. Drivers drive on large and small roads and highways. They need to be alert, awake and ready to take evasive action when needed to avoid other vehicles or bad road conditions. Driving is something which every licensed driver should take seriously. The safe driver recognizes that driving isn’t a right given due to age or experience, but a privilege to safe guard so that privilege is not lost in the consequences of one or more bad choices.
Safe drivers save lives, and not just their own. When drivers make a habit of watching the weather, the road, other cars and other drivers, their vigilance spots the driver who swerves into their lane or the tire flung into the road and are able to take action needed to avoid an accident. During inclement weather a safe driver slows down to compensate for the inability to see the road ahead or other cars clearly. Weather conditions along with erratic driving by other drivers and road conditions lead to accidents. Drivers who drive defensively are able to take action required to avoid them. They know accidents cost money. Not only do safe drivers save the lives of other drivers and passengers by having fewer accidents, they also prevent accidents that might injure or kill themselves.
Safe drivers have good driving records. Safe drivers do not assume that traffic signs are mere suggestions to be followed only if they are in the mood to do so. Safe drivers recognize that traffic lights and signs, warning and speed signs have been carefully positioned to assist the flow of traffic or warn drivers to slow down due to bad road conditions, to animals crossing the road or to other dangerous road situations. Drivers who heed traffic signs prevent accidents. They also have driving records free of tickets or other traffic violation citations.
Safe drivers take responsibility for their actions which protects the rights of all drivers. Drivers who regularly disregard traffic laws and signs find themselves having to pay for tickets and other citations. Unsafe drivers, park in places they should not park, drive too fast for road conditions and do not consider the rights of other drivers or their own responsibility to drive in a way that creates safe driving conditions for all concerned.
Safe drivers keep their cars in better working order. Safe drivers do not slam on the breaks, jerk the steering wheel, constantly stop and start or speed whenever possible. They don’t force their cars through holes in the road or through high, rushing water. Unsafe drivers do not realize or care that their method of driving is hard on their cars and creates a situation where their cars will break down more quickly than cars of safe drivers. Safe drivers drive with the condition of the road in mind. They stay aware that safe and defensive driving practices keeps their cars in good condition and on the road.
Safe drivers save stress. Too many drivers think the quickest way between two points on the road is the speed at which they can go from one point to the other. People in today’s world have busy schedules. They are constantly hurrying from one appointment or event to another. Most of the time, getting from one thing on the schedule to another requires getting into a vehicle and driving to the next appointment, activity, game or event. Those who speed in order to save time end up stressed. When other drivers do not seem in the same rush they are or when a situation blocks the forward movement of the line of cars, they honk, call out names and work themselves into unreasonable anger that sometimes erupts into dangerous confrontations.
Safe drivers save time. Drivers speeding from one place to another increase the risk of car accidents for everyone on the road around them. An accident, however minor, squanders time. Safe drivers take note of conditions as well as the disposition of the drivers in the cars around them. They realize allowing appropriate time to get to where they are going and following traffic laws will get them where they need to be without substantially increasing stress and without creating avoidable accidents.
Safe drivers are a good insurance risk. Safe driving makes a difference in how much is paid out for insurance. Drivers who take care of their cars, drive within the traffic laws, and are alert to traffic and road conditions are drivers who will find lower insurance rates than drivers who don’t take such care. Insurance rates are based on the driver’s age, experience and driving record. A safe driving record tells the insurance company the driver is a good insurance risk and is a safe driver. Safe drivers are offered good insurance rates.
